I was raised on a family farm,  where I did all sorts of farm work in my formative years.

Let’s see—I fed and watered calves, drove cattle, milked cows, washed the dairy barn, searched for lost livestock,  fed and watered sheep, gave medicine to sheep, docked lambs, fed swine, chickens, ducks, geese and goats, butchered chickens, gathered eggs, chased various escaping animals, rode a horse, fixed fences, hauled grain, sowed wheat, plowed and worked ground, cut hay, baled hay, hauled hay, picked and husked corn, loaded silage, ground grain.

At various times I operated vehicles, including pickups, tractors and combines.

When I look back on all of this, I see farm labor as an important part of my upbringing. It taught me a lot about life, work and responsibility.

I think most people raised on farms would probably say something similar. Living and working on a farm is a way of life.

But recent regulations proposed by the Obama Administration’s Department of Labor may severely restrict such work for young people on farms today—and, by an amazing coincidence, increase opportunities for illegal aliens.

Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul all apparently agree on one thing: if Puerto Rico votes for U.S. statehood, it should become a U.S. state.

Which may be about to happen. In late December of 2011, Puerto Rico’s governor Luis Fortuno signed legislation authorizing a referendum on Puerto Rico’s status,  to be held on November 6, 2012— the same day as the U.S. presidential election—along with the regular Puerto Rican legislative and gubernatorial elections.

That referendum could lead to Puerto Rico’s becoming the 51st state.

A lot of people think that’s great, or at least they say that. The Democrats stand  to get two more Senators, and several more congressional representatives and Electoral College votes,  so why would they object?

But before making Puerto Rico the 51st state, shouldn’t we examine the issue and see how sensible it is? If Puerto Rico votes for statehood, are we duty-bound to grant it?

Shouldn’t Americans have a say in whether or not Puerto Rico becomes a state?   And would it really be good for Puerto Rico itself, in the long run?

What can one say about Mexico City? It’s the capital of Mexico, the biggest metropolis in the Western Hemisphere and the world’s eighth-richest city. It’s also a first-rate tourist attraction.

Located in the Valle de México (Valley of Mexico), a natural bowl ringed in by volcanoes and mountains, the city sits at an altitude of 7,350 feet above sea level. That makes it higher than Denver, Colorado, which at 5,280 feet is the Mile-High City.

When my family and I visited Mexico City this past summer, the climate was quite pleasant, much cooler than my home in the United States when we returned.

Just what were they thinking in the U.S. Justice Department?  What were they thinking when they cooked up a scheme to allow thousands more weapons to be smuggled to Mexican drug cartels?  And will anybody ever be held accountable for it?

It’s not as if there weren’t enough weapons floating around Mexico.  There are plenty of them, and they’re not all from the U.S.  But why make the situation even worse?  Why would they make it easier to get more weapons into the hands of the drug cartels?

This year, 2011, marks the centennial of the birth of Ronald Wilson Reagan, who served as President of the United States from 1981 to 1989.

In the conservative movement and the Republican party, Reagan is  considered the exemplary Republican politician of the 20th century, and many of us were greatly influenced by him.

Reagan has his admirers in other countries. This year statues of Reagan were unveiled  in Poland,
Georgia (the ex-Soviet country) and London, England (on July 4th).

Reagan was born February 6th, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois…

Syria is in turmoil. Throughout the year, an uprising has shaken the country, security forces have defended the regime and thousands have died.

There have been calls for the U.S. to intervene. Senator John McCain, for one, is open to the possibility of U.S. military intervention. Is this a good idea?

The drug war in Mexico continues, with all its violence, mayhem and loss of life.

Among the various factors contributing to this disastrous situation is the growing demand for illegal drugs on the U.S. side of the border.  To put it another way, American narcotics purchasers are the principal financiers of the Mexican drug cartels.

This has led some to ask if the U.S. government’s War on Drugs is really the best strategy.  Is the War on Drugs exacerbating the problem?  Does it drive up the price of illegal drugs, thus making them more lucrative?  Higher prices, in turn, provide bigger profit margins to those who smuggle and sell narcotics.

Is drug legalization or decriminalization an answer to the problem?

“Voting rights are under attack in America”  declared  Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, a black veteran of the Civil Rights era.

What is he talking about?

Representative Lewis is talking about voters being required to present photo ID  when voting, which he says is a horrible injustice.

Lewis and other Democrats are unhappy that more and more states are tightening up their voter registration laws, some even requiring—gasp!—photo ID.
