As in 2008, Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith is still an issue. Last month, Romney visited America’s most-famous evangelist, Billy Graham, and son Franklin. Romney received an endorsement. This endorsement, and the way it was handled, is a source of controversy in some evangelical circles.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, also known by his initials AMLO, was the runner-up in the 2006 and 2012 presidential elections, though he refused to concede either election.

AMLO has recently endorsed Obama in the U.S. election, and has excoriated Republicans for “racism against the immigrants”.

Does the Maya calendar really prophesy the end of the world on December 21st, 2012?  There’s been a lot of hysteria about this topic.

However, even the purveyors of the hysteria are not in agreement on what it entails. Is it the end of the world, the end of life on earth, or “just” the end of human civilization or “widespread catastrophe”?  Or is it a new “cosmic consciousness” or “global harmony”?
What’s the evidence, anyway?

The 2012 Olympic Games, held in London, have ended.   Over 200 teams competed, and one of them was the Puerto Rican team.   Puerto Rico, though it is a U.S. territory, has had its own Olympic team since 1948.  This year’s Puerto Rican team brought home two medals, which taking into consideration Puerto Rico’s population (less than 4 million) is commendable.   After all, the majority of countries competing in London won no medals at all, and  Puerto Rico tied for 63rd place with Estonia, Bulgaria, Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia.  Indonesia, at 238 million is the world’s fourth-most population country!

What does the existence of the Puerto Rican team, and its support on the island tell us about Puerto Rican nationalism?   What about Puerto Rico’s future status?  How would its Olympic team situation change if it became the 51st state of the United States?  These are questions worth considering, for the good of the U.S. and of Puerto Rico.

In a rather bizarre twist in the by-now-familiar quest to win Hispanic voters for Romney, a group of  Hispanic Republicans is attacking Obama for –  deporting too many illegal aliens?

As Stephen Dinan reports in the Washington Times in  “Conservative Ads in Spanish Tell a Different Story to Hispanics”  (Aug. 9th, 2012):

Polls show President Obama holds a clear advantage among Hispanic
voters this year, but a new Spanish-language television ad, running
in Nevada and sponsored by a conservative group, aims to peel
away those supporters by arguing that his administration set records
for deporting illegal immigrants. It’s a message that could backfire
if it were in English — deporting illegal immigrants is a popular stance
in many conservative communities. But English-speaking voters likely
will never see the ad, which is running on two major Spanish-language
            networks in Las Vegas.

This is what happens when politicians run ads in a foreign language.  It closes out the mainstream English-speaking population from knowing what’s being promised to a minority group.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) was a candidate for president of Mexico for the PRD (Partido de la Revolución Democrática) and two smaller parties.  AMLO was the election’s runner-up, but he didn’t accept his defeat and is now disputing the election results.

Wait a minute.  Are we talking about the 2006 election, or the 2012 election?

It could be either, because the same thing happened both times.  Déjà vu?  Or just another Mexican presidential election involving AMLO?

Yes, AMLO is indeed disputing another election, as he did six years ago.

The food stamp program,  run by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is now referred to officially as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).  The food products are now purchased with an electronic debit card known as an EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer).   However, the old name stuck and the benefits received are still commonly called “food stamps”.

According to the USDA, in fiscal 2011 a record 44.7 million U.S. residents received food stamps, at a cost of 75.3 billion dollars.   The number one SNAP-receiving state was Rick Perry’s Texas, followed by California and then Florida.    By June of 2012 , the figure was at about 46.4 million.

About a seventh of the U.S.  resident U.S. population is now on food stamps, but to the federal government that’s not enough.   There are still folks who are eligible for the program who but aren’t collecting, so the feds are trying to convince more people to apply for SNAP.

The majority of food stamp recipients are not Hispanics.   But, the government would like to get  more Hispanics on the program.  The USDA even has a page on its website entitled “Reaching Low-Income Hispanics With Nutrition Assistance”.
