Within the next few years, the U.S.-Mexican border may have a very famous world figure crossing it on foot. Pope Francis himself, the first Latin American pontiff, has expressed a desire to do so.
Speaking to reporters on an airplane, Pope Francis said that “To enter the United States from the border with Mexico would be a beautiful gesture of brotherhood and support for immigrants.”
It sounds like a cheap, hypocritical stunt to me.
All Catholics are not, however, open borders fanatics. A recent issue of Chronicles magazine looks at the issue of immigration, and has articles by Catholics who don’t support open borders.

My family and I recently returned from our annual Christmastime visit to Mexico, and it was a good one.
When we lived in Mexico, we would visit the U.S. at Christmastime. Since we’ve moved to the U.S., we go to Mexico at Christmastime.
Millions of Mexicans residing in the U.S. visit Mexico at Christmastime, so this visit gives me a chance to observe this phenomenon firsthand, and, in a sense, to be part of it.

The Obama Administration continues with its unilateral illegal alien amnesty, with the full support and cooperation of the Mexican government, and others.
The Mexican government is not just supporting the amnesty verbally. Mexico is providing documentation to help Mexican illegal aliens remain north of the border. And nobody in our government, of either major party, seems to care about this.
Mexico has a vast consular network in the U.S., consisting of 50 consulates, which it uses to meddle in U.S. immigration policy.
A U.S. government which defended our sovereignty (obviously not the current administration) could, however, in an ironic twist, utilize this consular network in the abolition of birthright citizenship for illegal alien babies.

The English language is an important unifying element of American society. It used to be, that is. Today, linguistic balkanization is dividing Americans, and our own politicians (of both parties) encourage it.
Think about it. Which is easier – to keep up with lying politicians in one language, or in two or more languages?
President Obama’s recent State of the Union address provides us two examples of this lingustic balkanization. First, did you know that there are official Spanish subtitles for the State of the Union? I didn’t know that, but there are. This year, they were garbled, Well, a more basic question is, why have these subtitles anyway? Shouldn’t all American citizens know English?
The Republicans are contributing to the problem. This year the GOP designated not one, but two politicians to respond to the State of the Union – one speaking English and one speaking Spanish! And guess what, these two were not saying the same thing!
Is this not a problem?

Each new year, statistics on Mexican crime and violence from the previous year are released and examined. It’s a grisly business, examining statistics representing real people who were crime victims, including those who were killed.
What analysts are looking for are long-term trends – which direction are the statistics heading? And that’s not easy. Of course, a few caveats are in order…..

Mexico’s richest man Carlos Slim, now the world’s second richest man and sometimes the world’s richest man, is now the biggest shareholder in the New York Times. You’d think more would be made of this, but it’s not a big deal in the media.
Obviously, the New York Times itself is not going to point out the possible conflict of interest. After all, America’s “paper of record” publishes “All the News that’s Fit To Print”, or is that “All the News that Fits”?

The Oklahoma Land Run was a unique aspect of American history, and an important part of the state of Oklahoma’s heritage.
Taking place from 1889 to 1895, the land runs were races for land, in which prospective landowners raced for 160-acre farms. If they could successfully occupy these farms for five years, they would receive title.
For many years, schoolchildren in Oklahoma have participated in land run reenactments in school. It’s a lively way of learning history and the state’s heritage, through participation.
These reenactments though, may soon belong to the past. At least in the Oklahoma City school district, they have been banned, thanks to the intervention of the Obama Administration and that of a local activist. Will the rest of the state follow?

In December of 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban leader Raul Castro simultaneously announced the “normalization” of U.S.-Cuban relations.
Despite all the hoopla, the normalization is still really a proposal and there are many details to be resolved. And how might it affect Mexico?
