Many a city worldwide has its famous downtown square, or plaza.    Such a plaza is an essential part of a city’s history and identity. Consequently, it is a major draw for tourists.

Mexico City’s principal plaza, called the Zocalo, fills such a role and is the heart of that great metropolis.

The Zocalo and the surrounding area is where Mexico City began, in 1325, and for the past  (almost) 700 years, through all the changes of government,  it has been the heart of Mexico City.
