Today is August 13th, 2021. It’s the 500th anniversary of the Fall of Tenochtitlan on August 13th, 1521.
Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec Empire. It was a magnificent city on a lake.
On August 13th, 1521, the siege of Tenochtitlan by Hernan Cortes and the Spaniards, with their many Indian allies, ended in triumph for Hernan Cortes. That was 500 years ago.
After the fall of the city, it was rebuilt by the Spaniards, using the same stones of the buildings they’d destroyed. That city still exists, it’s Mexico City.
What is the historical significance of this date for Mexico today?
